Why add deionized water to chemistry experiment?

Conducting chemistry experiment determining if mass increases or decreases when creating magnesium oxide with heat. On the third sample the instructions were to add 5 to 10 drops of deionized H2O to the magnesium sample then burn off. What is the reason for the H20? And does it have any real effect on the experiment?
