Why do some objects like metals reflect light while others like wood, don't?

I understand that the light energy doesn't propagate into the metal but returns in a reflected wave. And that the rigid surface bounce off the lights but what about objects like wood, or cotton? Don't they have rigid edges that can reflect off the lights. Can someone give me an explanation or a link?
