Magnesium oxide vs magnesium powder?

So im new to fireworks and im wondering when a formula calls for magnesium powder can magnesium oxide powder be used? wouldnt magnesium powder be magnesium oxide due to the oxygen in the air or am I missing something? Basically I need magnesium powder but all I find is magnesium oxide powder and im wondering if the two are the same thing.
